The mummy of the unknown Mr. X from Achmim in Upper Egypt dates from the Ptolemaic period and is approximately 2300 years old. Along with the mummy of Ms. X, it belongs to the collection of the August Kestner Museum in Hanover.
Mr. X was one of the first mummies to be recorded in a CT scanner in its entire length. A distance of 1 mm between the cross-sectional images allows for a high resolution display.
A median sagittal cut through the linen wrapping reveals the skeleton, and with it some interesting findings. The forearms of Mr. X are crossed on the chest. The feet are severed from the legs and lie next to and across them, respectively. Since other cases are known where a mummy was compressed to make it fit a too small coffin, it seems possible that this was done here as well.
