The Egyptians believed in an eternal life after death which they would lead in the hereafter. They imagined the afterlife as a reflection of life on earth, but without physical or material hardships.
To be admitted to this next world, the deceased had to pass a judgment of the dead before the god Osiris. Thereby it was examined whether his or her life had been lived according to moral standards.
In the Ptolemaic period, wreath-shaped bundles of plant material served as a symbol for a successfully passed judgment of Osiris. They are referred to as the crown of justification. In this case, wrapped stalks of rushes were used.
