The mummy’s head is covered by a mummy mask made of linen cardboard. This consists of several layers of linen, on which a thin layer of stucco is applied as a painting base.
Mummy masks are not shaped according to the individual features of the deceased, but represent an idealized image. Sometimes you can’t even tell if it’s the mask of a man or a woman. With the eyes wide open, the mummy is portrayed at the moment of reawakening after death, to live an eternal life in the world to come. The golden paint on the face symbolizes that the judgment of the dead has already decided in favor of the woman and that she is now a transfigured being.
Described parts of the mummy’s head: mask, crown of justification, linen wrapping, skull, ointment, fixation stick, coffin.
